Upcoming films in August

The Movie Guy
July delivered two of the biggest films and three of my favourite films of the year so far, so how will August measure up?

From action-packed thrillers to sci-fi mysteries and animated adventures, August's cinema line-up offers something for every movie fan.

There are a few films I’m really looking forward to, and then there are a few I didn’t even know were coming. At the end of the day, any month featuring a dinosaur film has some pretty strong competition. I bet you can tell that The End of Oak Street is the film I’m most excited about.

PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie

The PAW Patrol pups find themselves on an island filled with dinosaurs and must stop a dangerous plan before it causes disaster. It is, of course, aimed at a much younger audience than me, but I have to admit that adding dinosaurs does make PAW Patrol a little more interesting. I probably won’t be rushing to the cinema for this one, but families should enjoy it.

The End of Oak Street

When a mysterious cosmic event separates an ordinary neighbourhood from the rest of the world, one family must figure out what has happened. I love a good science-fiction mystery, and add dinosaurs to the mix and my cinema tickets are practically booked.

21 August

Mutiny

Jason Statham stars as Cole Reed, a man who witnesses his billionaire boss being murdered and is then blamed for the crime. He is forced to uncover a much larger conspiracy. Mutiny looks exactly like the kind of action film I enjoy. Sometimes you just need Jason Statham punching people and things exploding, and I’m completely happy with that.

Insidious: Out of the Further

A young mother discovers that she can enter the supernatural realm known as The Further, but soon realises that she may also be able to bring things back with her. This may be the one film I’ll probably skip because, as regular readers will know, horror really isn’t my thing. Fans of the Insidious franchise, however, should be excited to see Lin Shaye return as Elise Rainier.

Spa Weekend

Four friends head to a luxury spa for a relaxing weekend, but things quickly descend into chaos when their annoying friend shows up. Spa Weekend looks like it could be a fun, silly comedy. I’m not expecting the next big comedy hit, but if it can deliver a few good laughs, I’m in.

28 August

Coyote vs ACME

After ACME products repeatedly fail to help him catch the Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote decides to take the company to court with the help of a human lawyer. Coyote vs Acme is probably one of the August releases I’m most curious about. I grew up with Looney Tunes, so there’s definitely a big nostalgia factor here.

The Dog Stars

In a post-apocalyptic world, a pilot living in isolation receives a mysterious radio signal that could offer hope for humanity, and sets out to find its source. I’m a big fan of a good post-apocalyptic story, and with a director like Ridley Scott, The Dog Stars is definitely one I’ll be keeping an eye on.

August once again offers a great variety, and who knows? Maybe PAW Patrol will dominate the box office, or perhaps The End of Oak Street will be the best dinosaur film since the original Jurassic Park. All I know is that it could be an interesting month at the cinema.
