Water crucial to climate change agenda
NEWS IN SHORT
The United Nations must recognise and elevate water in its climate change agenda to do it justice, agriculture minister Calle Schlettwein said ahead of the UN Water Conference.
Schlettwein said the conference is a pivotal point in the quest to look into the future and see how climate change and water are related and should be merged.
"From that vantage point, we as Africa, through the African Ministers' Council on Water, have the view that climate change is, to a large extent, actually related to water and is driven by the availability of water."
He said it is clear that water does not play a central role in the climate change agenda.
"It is still judged as a matter that must be discussed in terms of a management plan for a scarce resource. We believe it is much more than that."
He said it is an existential commodity, without which life or any economic development is not possible.
