Three farms for N$30 million

The price at which agricultural land is offered to the government in relation to the appropriated budget for land acquisition continues to be a challenge for the land reform ministry. The ministry during the previous financial year bought three farms totalling N$30 million for the distribution of land to disadvantaged landless Namibians. Minister Calle Schlettwein said this when he tabled the agriculture and land reform ministry’s annual budget of N$1.25 billion for the 2022/2023 financial year in parliament.He said during the 2021/2022 financial year the land reform ministry planned to acquire 37 500 hectares of commercial agricultural land, but due to budget constraints the target was revised to 17 805 hectares. “In our efforts to ensure equitable distribution and access to land by the previously disadvantaged landless Namibians, the ministry managed to acquire three farms measuring 21 454 hectares at a cost of N$30 million.”According to Schlettwein the ministry further acquired a farm measuring 5 047 hectares at a cost of N$12.1 million for the resettlement of the Batswana of Namibian descent.Communal landWith regard to the development of communal land, Schlettwein said that since the launch of the programme in 2014, investment planning for infrastructure measures has been conducted on 791 000 hectares in regions such as Kavango East, Kavango West, Zambezi, Ohangwena, Omusati, Omaheke, Otjozondjupa and Oshikoto.“A total of 900 000 hectares of land is earmarked for infrastructure development. So far the development of infrastructure has covered a total area of 270 500 hectares in communal areas.”Schlettwein said the ministry has completed drilling and rehabilitation of boreholes in the Kavango East, Omaheke and Otjozondjupa regions for installation and construction of water supply infrastructure during the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 financial year.
