#JustIn: Cattle marketing takes a dive

Elvira Hattingh
On a year-on-year basis, the marketing of beef fell by double digits in February in all segments of the beef sector, according to the latest statistics by the Meat Board of Namibia.

"The starting point is to create a conducive environment for improved investments within the livestock sector, which will lead to greater primary production," the Meat Board noted in its latest report on February's livestock marketing figures.

"A big part of creating a favorable environment for farmers includes paying livestock producers competitive prices on an ongoing basis," it said.

A total of 13 670 cattle were marketed in February. This represents a contraction of 24.5% on a year-on-year basis. Of these, 61% - mostly weaners - were exported on the hoof to South Africa and Botswana.

However, live exports of weaned calves shrank by 16.9% compared to 2022 due to a smaller demand for Namibian animals from South Africa. In addition, reporting at both export and B and C class abattoirs decreased by 26.6% and 49.3% respectively.
