Swapo recruits criminals - Itula

Kenya Kambowe
Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) leader Panduleni Itula says the ruling party Swapo has proven to be an organisation that recruits criminals. He was referring to former ministers Sacky Shanghala and Bernhardt Esau, who are currently in jail following their alleged involvement in the Fishrot scandal.

Itula took aim at Swapo during the launch of his party’s 2024 election campaign held in Rundu on Saturday.

The IPC leader did not mince his words when he told those in attendance that their only hope for a better Namibia is by voting for his party at the upcoming general elections, saying Swapo has proven itself unfit to govern.

“[Swapo] is a party that has proven to be unfit for governing. A party that has proved that it recruited criminals. It’s the only party that has criminals, former ministers in prison,” he said.

“Do we want more evidence? If you have a party where a member of Cabinet is in prison today, we talk about collective leadership here - that entire collective leadership of that Cabinet too has got something to do with the criminal activities of the others.

“How could we possibly talk about a party with legitimacy and the sovereignty with which the people had voted that is known to have participated in Fishrot?”

Not audited

“The 2017 elections are known to have been funded with money other than that which was declared in audited financial reports,” he said.

Itula added that his party managed to get hold of Swapo’s audited financial books from the Electoral Commission of Namibia; however, following scrutiny by auditors and chartered accountants, it was discovered that the financials allegedly aren’t worth regarding as audited.

He argued that the books did not indicate how the ruling party acquired the over N$700 million it is said to cost Swapo to construct its new headquarters, which is currently under construction.

The IPC leader said Swapo’s financials also don’t show how it is paying the contractors working on the building.
