Youthful killer awaits his fate
The arguments for sentencing in the murder case of a young man who was found guilty of killing the mother of his two minor children has been postponed to 9 April.
Willem Freddy Eksteen, 22, was found guilty at the end of February by High Court Judge Dinnah Usiku of strangling his girlfriend, Janetta Babiep, 19, at the farm Warmfontein on 21 September 2014.
Usiku said the accused cut the life of an innocent young mother short when he killed her for reasons known only to himself.
“You were alone with the deceased in the room at the time of her death. This was a brutal offence against a defenceless young woman,” Usiku said.
During his trial and in his evidence-in-chief, Eksteen vehemently denied killing Babiep, claiming that she took her own life by hanging herself with a rope in the room.
His claim of suicide was rejected by the court as false and a mere afterthought in order for him to evade prosecution.
Eksteen and the deceased were involved in a romantic relationship at the time of her death and the two had children together.
Windhoek lawyer Milton Engelbrecht defended Eksteen on the instructions of Legal Aid while Felistas Shikerete-Vendura appeared for the prosecution.
