Windhoek gang targets coastal businesses
The police in Walvis Bay have urged service station owners and members of the public at the coast to be wary of a group of criminals from Windhoek.
The police's community liaison officer for Walvis Bay, Constable Kristopherus Mbunju, said the police were tipped off about the presence of this particular group targeting businesses in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, as well as homes at Langstrand.
“We received reliable intelligence that the gang arrived at the coast and is preparing to start operating during the festive season. I am visiting all service stations and some businesses to alert them. Service station owners in particular should beef up their security aspects. The owners of businesses should make sure that surveillance cameras are working properly and are monitored at all times.”
Mbunju also cautioned against allowing strangers to take photographs and “selfies” with cellphones on business premises. Such photos can be used to plan the execution of robberies.
He pointed out that many robberies are inside jobs and said employers should be alert to this. He thanked the community for cooperating and said that the police and community members were partners in combating crime. He also encouraged communities to form neighbourhood watch groups and advised members of the public to inform existing neighbourhood watch groups of their travel plans.
“All neighbourhoods are encouraged to establish neighbourhood watch groups. Know your neighbour and exchange contact details. Ensure that windows are properly closed and doors are properly locked. Road users should drive responsibly and adhere to speed limits and the rules of the road.”
In conclusion, Mbunju advised anyone with information about criminals, or criminal activities in progress, to call the police on the emergency number 064-21 9048 or to send a text message to 081 485 0954.
