Windhoek coalition agreement pending

WINDHOEK
A coalition agreement is yet to be signed among political parties serving on the City of Windhoek's council, two months since taking office.
The councillors do not appear to be in a rush to sign the agreement, Independent Patriots for Change secretary-general Christine Aochamus and Affirmative Repositioning member Dimbulukeni Nauyoma told Namibian Sun.
Commenting on the status of the agreement, Nauyoma said it was only a matter of time before it would be signed.
“There are no concerns, there is nothing that is not completed. The documents are ready, there is nothing like there is no consensus, there is nothing that is outstanding. It is only a matter of time before we sign it,” Nauyoma said.
Aochamus said there was no rush to sign the agreement.
“On whose timeline are you basing it? We will make a pronouncement once we are ready. You just need to give us time,” Aochamus said when approached for comment.
LPM not budging
The Landless Peoples Movement was unwilling to join the coalition, citing ideological differences.
LPM walked out of negotiations last December.
“As we have said, we are open to any coalition but there should be a very clear policy. There have been attempts from all sides for the [coalition] document to be signed; it is still a discussion. We have received calls to join the coalition, we just need to iron out policy issues contained therein,” City of Windhoek councillor Ivan Skrywer said.
The council voted for AR leader Job Amupanda as mayor while Filemon Hambuda was elected chairperson of the management committee.
Clemencia Hanases of the Popular Democratic Movement was chosen as deputy mayor.
The IPC, AR, PDM and National Unity Democratic Organisation all have councillors appointed to the management committee while Swapo and LPM councillors serve as ordinary members.
