White maize, mahangu price relief

The coronavirus pandemic has negatively affected economic activities in the country and the agronomic and horticulture industry is no exception.
As a result, the Namibian Agronomic Board (NAB), in cooperation with the agriculture ministry, has come up with an initiative to ensure the affordability of staple foods such as white maize and mahangu.
The initiative offers benefits such as the reduction of the producer floor price for white maize grain by N$1 000 per ton. This is equivalent to N$8.96 million, based on the 64 000 metric tonnes expected to be harvested and marketed during the 2020 marketing season.
Furthermore, millers are to reduce unsifted maize meal prices by N$2 000 per ton to provide relief to end-consumers.
Cheaper input costs
According to the NAB, due to slightly cheaper input costs for mahangu production, the price has been reduced from N$5 609 per ton to N$4 988 per ton.
In addition, the NAB resolved to donate N$1.1 million towards purchasing food items for vulnerable groups.
“The NAB will continue its efforts in promoting the agronomic and horticultural industry and to facilitate the production, processing, storage and marketing of controlled products in Namibia,” the NAB said.
