Wardens spread festive cheer
Christmas came early for the beneficiaries of donations made by prison warders stationed at Omaruru.
Officers stationed at the Lucius Sumbwanyambe Mahoto Correctional Service Training College at Omaruru recently donated a variety of items to schools, the regional council as well as the community.
This stems from the officers' pledge to give back to the community in which they are stationed. The items were handed over last week by Commissioner-General Raphael Hamunyela of the Namibian Correctional Service (NSC).
“This year, the correctional service officers at the training college decided to deliver three different goodwill activities to four recipients, which include the construction of a public toilet in Omaruru's Hakana area, bedding which will be donated to the Erongo regional council and sanitary pads that are to be donated to the Otjiperongo Junior Secondary School and Martin Luther High School, respectively,” Hamunyela said.
According to him, staff members managed to contribute over N$10 000.
“In carrying out the first project, the staff of the training college managed to collect funds from amongst themselves totalling N$11 231.00 and also received sponsorship from four entities totalling to N$3 500. It is also important to mention here that the land on which this toilet is built was donated by the Omaruru municipality,” he said.
“With the above donations of N$14 731, the correctional officers and offenders constructed the two-door public toilet in the Hakahana suburb of Omaruru.”
In the same vein, the correctional service officers are also going to donate bedding to the regional council to the value of N$1 030, consisting of throws, blankets, duvet covers, standard pillow cases and bed sheets.
Hamunyela urged the community to take care of the items handed over to them.
“As we hand over this infrastructure and items, let me urge the community to take good care of particularly the toilet and to put the donated items to good use. This will motivate the correctional officers to keep on assisting communities through similar initiatives,” Hamunyela added.
