Veld fire data mapped

The Namibia Agriculture Union (NAU) has engaged the services of a mapping expert to gather an oversight on the countrywide situation of veld fires for the months April to August of this year.
Results obtained indicate that a total of 1 388 188 hectares of farmland, involving 503 farms and smallholdings either in part or in totality, have been impacted by veld fires.
According to the NAU, it appears that most fires are caused by negligent actions by individuals.
“Our dry season has just started, and we appeal for sensible and responsible action to avoid further losses through fires,” the union said.
The NAU is currently busy establishing the areas where fires have started and the cause of such fires.
