Lilia Shaningwa, deputy director of general services and examination administration at the education ministry, says the preparation for external examinations is at its final stage and the main activities have been successfully completed.

“This includes activities such as registration of candidates, admission permits have been issued to the candidates, the appointment of markers and invigilators has been done,” she said.

Shaningwa added that the regions have started with the training of invigilators and questions papers are about to be circulated all 14 regions and the contacting as well as administration of the national examination will follow soon.

Shaningwa further said should a candidate get infected or come in contact with a confirmed Covid case during the national exams, they will be allowed to write their external exams in quarantine or in a hospital under a supervision of a health official as an invigilator.

“To the candidate who is not fit to write, unfortunately they will not write their external exams and will write their exams next year,” she said.

Rholene Bock, Namcol marketing manager, said to prepare learners for examinations the institution through the education ministry has rolled out Notes Master and in March an estimated 5 000 learners were registered on the platform, and they currently have over 25 000 learners registered.

According to Elizabeth Ndjendja, deputy director of examinations, certification, correspondence and enquiries at the education ministry, the national examinations started last month.

“The higher-level second-language literature papers are already written and oral exams for French started on 15 September, however the oral exams for the rest of the languages are to start 21 October, which will be followed by the written exams that start on 9 November to 18 December.”

Ndjendja said these exams are no different than those of previous years, except that they mark the end of the NSSCO/H examinations used for the past 14 years.

“Next year these exams will only be written on part-time basis. New curriculum.”

Despite the fact that these exams are being written in the year of the global pandemic, it does not mean that the standards are lower.

Ndjendja said learners are ready to write exams.

“The grade 12 exams come after a two-year course, which means at the end of the first year most schools covered 60% to 70% of the content, including the days they spent within the first term of this year before the lockdown in March,” she said.

She added that grade 11 and 12 learners resumed school earlier and plans were made to ensure that they made up for lost time. Examinations were postponed by a month and this means schools still have time to touch up here and there.
