Shy Namibian track and field athlete Christine Mboma said after her 200-metre race in Spain last weekend that her opponents have no idea what is coming their way.

The record-breaker clocked 22.79 at the World Athletics Continental Tour in Madrid, rather allowing her talent to do the talking on the track.

Because of her performance and that of Beatrice Masilingi, who won her 400 m race in a time of 49.88 in Poland (Orlen Janusz Kusonciski Memorial event), the two have become hot property and have been invited to run in Stockholm, Poland and France.

Diamond League awaits

Coach Henk Botha shared this information, saying that Mboma will compete in Poland and France just before the Tokyo Olympic Games start on 23 July, and that Masilingi will compete at the Wanda Diamond League competition in Stockholm on 4 July.

Botha could not confirm the names of the events in which Mboma will compete, but the competition in which Masilingi will compete in, the Diamond League, has seen some of the world’s biggest track-and-field stars - the likes of Britain’s 200 m sprinter Dina Asher-Smit, 400 m Bahamian athlete Shaunae Miller-Uibo as well Bahraini athlete Salwa Eid Naser.

The premier competition will take place in 14 cities on four continents this year. It started in May with Rabat, Morocco, Doha, Rome and Oslo. Now the next stop is Stockholm, to be followed by Monaco and London.

The Wanda Diamond League will then take a break for the Tokyo Games and then continue during August in Shanghai, Eugene and China.

The last stops will be in Lausanne, Paris, Brussels and Zurich in September. Athletes will earn points in a bid to qualify for the finals, where they stand a chance to win the Diamond Trophy and be crowned Wanda Diamond League Champion in the chosen discipline. The winner takes all in the Zurich finale.

Speaking about wins, the prize money at stake for athletes competing in all disciplines is US$25 000 (N$357 000). In the final the Wanda Diamond League champion walks away with US$30 000 (N$428 000).
