Telecom welcomes first 'TN Mobile' product
After launching its rebranded TN Mobile service back in August, Telecom Namibia yesterday introduced the public to its first official internet product for the mobile phone market.
Available in both contract and pre-paid versions, Telecom Namibia Managing Director Frans Ndoroma said its new 4G LTE network was meant to offer fast and reliable service to citizens, regardless of their income level.
“4G LTE’s simplicity and convenience enables users to have secure remote access to their company network, making life much more efficient,†Ndoroma told those in attendance.
“Quite simply, it means you can work out of the office without compromising your productivity,†he said.
Claiming three times the speed currently offered on the market, the TN Mobile 4G LTE service comes in three packages, from the limited LTE 10GB (at N$398) to the uncapped LTE Unlimited and Hotspot (both at N$998).
Also speaking at the event was Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology Stanley Simataa, who attended the event on behalf of Minister Joel Kapanda.
The deputy minister recalled the process of government, as Telecom Namibia’s main shareholder, taking control of Leo holding company Powercom, saying this was a contested matter at the time.
“There were complaints that the government was forming a monopoly, but despite advertisements inviting the industry to the table, nobody was forthcoming. The private sector did not see the benefit. But today, from what I’m seeing and hearing, this was a decision done with tremendous foresight,†the deputy minister said.
“In fact, despite both Telecom and its competitor sharing the same mother company, we are seeing real, tough competition in the sector.â€
The company appointed to build the mobile network which will provide the 4G LTE service, China’s ZTE, noted the speed at which the project had been completed since starting in February 2013.
TN Mobile 4G LTE services are now available in Windhoek and its surrounding areas, at Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Langstrand, Henties Bay, Ondangwa, Ongwediva, Oshakati, Ohangwena and Oshikango.
