Telecom turns to US network company for upgrade plans

WINDHOEKSTAFF REPORTER Telecom Namibia yesterday announced pending upgrades to its voice and broadband services, thanks to a new agreement it has signed with US-based Zhone Technologies. The agreement comes after the local telecommunications provider launched a new drive to introduce next-generation 'Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) and 'Fibre to-the-Building' (FTTB) technologies into its network, which the company said it expects to lead to cost-effective broadband services for residential and business customers alike. “Zhone delivered exceptional performance and price to meet Telecom Namibia's need for innovative service offerings, while also maintaining a low cost of ownership through a ubiquitous access network,” Telecom Namibia Managing Director Frans Ndoroma said of the agreement. Zhone has reportedly committed itself to provide fibre and copper-based access solutions to about 150 000 lines over the course of the next three years. “Because Telecom Namibia, the biggest operator in Namibia, is a customer-driven company, it is important to provide bandwidth and multi-service solutions that meet customer demands,” Brian Caskey, Zhone Technologies' chief marketing officer, said of their involvement. “MXK has provided Telecom Namibia with a wide variety of services and media support. It has allowed a seamless migration from existing legacy systems to a full IP (Internet Protocol) based access solution, while also enabling Telecom Namibia to still handle its current legacy services,” he said.
