As part of its 61st birthday celebrations, Swapo continues to sing its own praises and warned its members not to become complacent.
Party president Hage Geingob, in a statement released on Sunday evening, said Swapo has a lot to celebrate
because “the party had been instrumental in reducing poverty”.
“As we look forward into the future with hope, we should acknowledge as the Swapo party that our successive leadership and government’s reduced poverty from 70% in 1993 to 18% in 2016,” Geingob said.
The party was also monumental in improving education and building good road infrastructure network, he said.
“It is the Swapo party government which has ensured that we are nation at peace, 90% of learners are in school, more health facilities are built and that we have the best roads in Africa,” the president said.
He, however, added that “we cannot deny the fact that Covid-19 poses material risks to the developmental gains of the past 31 years”.
Stand united
He encouraged Swapo members to stand united with government in its agenda to develop Namibia.
“As Namibians, and as committed cadres of the Swapo party, we should stand united with the government that we lead in order to minimise the health and socio-economic impacts of Covid-19 through continued purposeful interventions and an economic recovery programme under the Harambee Prosperity Plan 2,” Geingob said.
He cautioned the party’s members against becoming complacent, saying more needs to be done to achieve development.
“As the Swapo party rank and file, we are convinced that more still needs to be done to ensure that we bring about inclusive development and shared prosperity to our people. If our past of successful execution of the liberation mandate is a guidepost, we shall continue fulfilling the noble mission of creating conditions for all Namibians to excel and to prosper,” Geingob said.
