Stars retain Super Cup title

Namibia Premier League (NPL) defending champions Tigers lost 3-0 to African Stars on Saturday during the Standard Bank Super Cup.Stars managed to put up an impressive show from the onset to successfully defend the title they won last year.They claimed the title for the first time last year when they beat Tigers 1-0.Tigers dominated their first 20 minutes of the first half but it was Stars who took the lead in less than 25 minutes through former Tigers player Panduleni Nekundi, leaving the score 1-0 at halftime.Dennis Ngueza added Stars’ second goal a few minutes into the second half, with Treasure Kauapirura sealing it for his team to score an impressive 3-0 victory.The champions dominated the second half, but wasted scoring opportunities.Nicky Musambani replaced Hakuria in the first half; Alfeus Handura came on at halftime for Marius Kotze; and later on Godwin Jena substituted Edwin Korukuve.Mapenzi Muwanei and Sakaria Petrus came on for the lacklustre Tigers but not could change the game and in the end Kauapirura found space in the Tigers box to beat the hapless David Peterson in added time.Speaking to the media after their match, Stars coach Bobby Samaria said they had a game plan and that was to dominate the match.“I think both teams started off with a good approach but we had it good after we scored our first goal and knew that they would come pressing and we got them to score the second goal,” he said.He said overall his team managed the game very well and that Tigers started off very well with the pace but Stars neutralised.“I told the boys to enjoy while playing and not after the game and that’s what they did,” he said.Tigers Coach Brian Isaacs was unhappy with his team’s performance.“It was a poor performance from our side. We had a game plan but the execution of the game plan was not there and we did not perform well in the first half and in the second half they lost control over the game and lost concentration. Our performance as a team was just not up to standard,” he said.He maintained that their defence was poor as individuals and as a team.Stars walked away with the coveted trophy and a cheque of N$500 000 while Tigers received N$200 000 for their part in the memorable game. - Additional reporting NFA.ORGKAINO NGHITONGO
