The Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) has lauded the government for the latest disbursement of study loans by the Namibia Students Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF).

NSFAF received 23 000 applications, of 17 394 met the funding requirements and 16 185 students were approved for funding.

On behalf of the successful students, SPYL secretary for education Hofni Iipinge thanked the government for enabling them to pursue tertiary education.

The minister of higher education, technology and innovation, Dr Itah Kandjii-Murangi, stated that with the new curriculum introduced by the ministry of education, arts and culture, the NSFAF online application was modified to incorporate both the legacy grade 12 as well as the learners exiting high school with the Ordinary Level certificate at grade 11.

This has raised expectations that institutions of higher learning would register many students who meet NSFAF funding requirements.

Kandjii-Murangi announced that the validation process had been completed.

“The government through NSFAF shall award 16 185 applicants that have met the criteria of income mean-testing (parental / guardian or own income), academic performance, and priority fields of study. This number is for undergraduate, vocational and post-graduate studies,” explained Kandjii-Murangi.

“To us this is a milestone achievement that the government has achieved through our roundtable discussion since 2017 when I got elected as a secretary for education,” Iipinge said.

He added that currently, they have stability in education, no more student demonstration over funding, no more students not writing exams and no more students’ results withheld due to non-payment of fees.

“Our SPYL advocacy is for affordable education to all our students with the vision to develop Namibia as we will have quality, well-trained graduates in different fields needed to boost our economy. Namibia is ours and it remains in the hands of young people as future generations and leaders of this country,” he said.
