Sport museum on the fast track
Sport authorities want to speed up the establishment of a hall of fame for Namibia's sport stars.
The ministry of sport and the Namibia Sport Commission (NSC) have intensified their plans to open the country's first sport museum.
Namibian Sun is in possession of a document that outlines the aims of the sport museum. In an attempt to fast-track the establishment of the museum, the sports commission has asked all its stakeholders to endorse the proposal, which is to be submitted to cabinet. The proposal was drafted by the National Sports Museum advisory committee.
The main objective of the museum will be to collect, preserve and share the history of sport in Namibia.
The ministry and the sport commission hope to inspire and educate young Namibians by means of the museum. “It is important that for Namibia to have a facility that will collect and display sport souvenirs... a facility that will be accessible to athletes, students, historians and visitors from around the world,” the proposal reads.
“The National Sport Museum will especially be important to our nation, as it explains who we are and how we got here...” the document reads. The ministry feels that Namibian sportsmen and -women deserve a facility that would preserve their legacy and acknowledge their contribution towards the country's sport history.
The museum will focus on the different sport codes represented in Namibia and their achievements.
An important element of the museum will be to promote a physically fit nation. The role of the museum is further to provide a facility for preserving artefacts reflecting Namibian sport heritage.
It will also contain resources to stimulate research and production of educational material in the field of sport. It will serve as a collecting museum with trained staff and facilities to manage collections.
“I therefore request all inputs to be given to us latest 3 April, as your input will help...” NSC chief administrator Simataa Mwiya wrote.
