Special Olympics basketball team off to Summer Games
Namibia's Special Olympics basketball team departed for Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates on Friday, where they will compete in the 2019 Special Olympic World Summer Games.
The Summer Games will take place from 14 to 21 March and will see 170 countries and 7 000 athletes competing in various sport codes.
A group of 17 mixed basketball players, a coach and team doctor were sent off by the Namibia Sports Commission's chief administrator Freddy Mwiya, who told the athletes to use the opportunity to network with others.
“Winning should come as a bonus. You need to travel to these games to make friendships while at the same time flying the Namibian flag with dignity,” said Mwiya, adding he was happy to see the team getting funds to compete at the games.
Special Olympics International, which funded marathon runner Ruben //Gowaseb's trip to the games, once again came to the rescue of the basketball team that did not have funds to travel.
Wahl Abrahams, assistant head of the delegation, said the team will compete well and lift the Namibian banner high. The opening ceremony of the Summer Games will take place on 14 March, while the closing ceremony is set for 21 March.
