Schoolchildren find corpse near road
Children walking to school on Wednesday morning made a gruesome discovery along the Okankolo-Onayena road in the Oshikoto Region.
They found the body of 36-year-old Petrina Amunyela, who is suspected to have been beaten to death by her boyfriend.
According to the acting regional commander of police in Oshikoto, Deputy Commissioner Naomi Katjiwa, the murder happened during the night of January 26/27 at Oniiwe village.
It is alleged that Amunyela, who lived at Onanyege village, was beaten to death with an unknown object.
The police have arrested her boyfriend, George Shiveinge Shaanika, 34, and charged him with murder and domestic violence.
Shaanika appeared in the Magistrate’s Court at Ondangwa yesterday.
During the past few years Namibia has been devastated by ever-increasing cases of femicide and domestic violence. Former President Hifikepunye Pohamba declared March 6, 2014 as National Day of Prayer against Gender-Based Violence.
