Ride virtually to save a rhino
The brand 'Touch and Go' is bringing the first-ever Brandberg Rhino Run/Walk and Ride Virtual Race to everyone who was unable to travel to Uis on 11 June to take part in the Brandberg Rhino Run and Ride.
The event will take place on 24 and 25 June. Participants in the virtual race can be run, walk or cycle in any location, even indoors on a treadmill, in a group or alone, or as part of another race. The participant pays an entry fee which goes to the non-profit organisation, Save the Rhino Trust.
Participants are then tasked to share their experience by submitting photos and comments on social media or via email.
Runners, walkers and cyclists can take part in the Brandberg Rhino Run and Ride Virtual Race for a fee of N$100 and choose from a five-kilometre run, walk or cycling event.
Entry fee includes a Brandberg Rhino Run t-shirt for the first 100 entries and a beautifully handcrafted medal. Participants receive an electronic race bib which they then print and wear on the race day.
There is a special prize for the participant that submits the best photo of themselves on social media under the hashtag #rhinorunFrance as they take part in the race.
Entry forms and information is on www.touchandgo.com.na under Brandberg Rhino Run and Ride, or email Riana Scholtz on [email protected].
Thus far entries have been received from participants from Keetmanshoop, Windhoek, Walvis Bay, Gobabis, New Zealand, London and Japan.
Nico Scholtz from Touch and Go said that one participant entered herself and her son twice, and plans to take part in the run on Saturday and to partake in the ride on Sunday. “It is heart-warming to see so many athletes that participated in the event in Uis on 11 June also entering to take part in the virtual race. That is the true spirit of being active for rhino conservation,” said Scholtz.”
The event is coordinated to coincide with the Mont Blanc Marathon, which takes place in Chamonix, France, on 25 June. One of the virtual race organisers will be taking part in the marathon in support of Save the Rhino Trust, as extension of the Brandberg Rhino Run and Ride fundraising and awareness raising campaign.
The organisers are liaising with conservationist organisations in France and Switzerland to support the campaign and also take part in the Virtual Race.
