SWAKOPMUND

Timoteus Haimbodi made his first appearance in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court for theft with aggravating circumstances last Thursday.

The accused allegedly attacked an 82-year-old resident of the coastal town last week.

According to Erongo police spokesperson Inspector Ileni Shapumba, Haimbodi allegedly robbed the elderly woman of property worth N$33 500.

“He entered the yard where the victim, Herma Emmerich, was watering her lawn. He grabbed and then dragged her inside her house before strangling her with a piece of clothing.”

The stolen property includes five gold rings, a gold necklace as well as a cellphone.

“The victim was reportedly found in a stable condition,” said Shapumba.

Hambodi was arrested on Wednesday and some of the stolen items were recovered.

‘Not guilty’

During his first court appearance before magistrate Nelao Brown, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.

The State, represented by prosecutor Johannes Shangadi, apposed bail, saying that Haimbodi is a repeat offender and on the grounds that he was charged with a serious crime.

“It is not in the public interest nor administration of justice to grant him bail, especially in light of an increase of robberies and murders committed involving the elderly of Swakopmund in the affluent parts of the town,” Shangadi said.

The case was postponed to 14 July to allow for further police investigations.

Haimbodi is remanded in custody at the Swakopmund police cells.
