NDONGA LINENA – With the electrification of Rumwemwe village by NamPower, six of the 22 main villages in the Ndonga Linena Constituency of Kavango East now have electricity.

Speaking at the official inauguration of the Kassian Shiyambi sub-station and electrification of Rumwemwe village by NamPower over the weekend, the constituency councillor of Ndonga Linena, Petrus Kavhura, said two of the villages took it upon themselves to collect money from residents to have electricity services installed in their areas.

The two villages - Shaya and Karukuta - approached the Northern Regional Electricity Distributor (Nored) for quotations, which came to N$400 000 and N$500 000 respectively.

Residents of Shaya village managed to raise more than NS100 000, while residents of Karukuta raised more than NS90 000.

The councillor called on NamPower, Nored, as well as the ministry of mines and energy to speed up the process for the villages that still need to be electrified.

The event was also attended by the deputy minister of mines and energy, Kornelia Shilunga.

She said the ministry spent N$12 million in the past two financial years to electrify schools in the Kavango East region.

The ministry is working tirelessly for all public institutions in the country, including schools and health facilities, to be electrified as part of the rural electrification programme, Shilunga said.

“People who live in rural areas were neglected during the colonial time, thus the ministry is determined to continue with the rural electrification programme countrywide,” she said.

Rural electrification has brought a positive impact in the lives of people living in rural communities and significant progress has been made in increasing electricity supply in these areas throughout the country, she added.

Access to electricity in rural areas will not only improve the standard of living of communities, but will also boost rural economic activities through small and medium enterprises, Shilunga continued.

“Apart from that, learners in electrified schools and communities will be able to study at night, thereby improving their academic performance,” she said.

The ministry will continue to put measures in place to accelerate the implementation of rural electrification programmes in the country as it is central to the focus areas in the 5th National Development Plan (NDP5).

“Electricity supply stands at the centre of all aspects of socio-economic development and is the indispensable force driving all factors of national development and economic activities,” Shilunga concluded. - Nampa
