The race to catch the deadline for qualification for the prestigious, multi-sport Olympic Games is on for Namibian athletes.
The qualification deadline is 29 June and the entry deadline 5 July.
Ten Namibians 10 athletes have qualified so far: marathon runners Helalia Johannes and Rainold Thomas, track-and-field athletes Christine Mboma and Beatrice Masilingi, boxer Jonas Junias, rower Maike Diekmann and cyclists Dan Craven, Michelle Vorster, Alex Miller and Vera Looser.
Fingers crossed for Seidler
Open-water swimmer Phillip Seidler is in Portugal preparing for a race scheduled for Sunday.
Mboma and Masilingi will run in two different races over the weekend as preparation. Mboma will compete in Madrid, Spain, in the 200-metre race, whereas Masilingi will be in action at the Orlen Janusz Kausocinski Memorial in Poland, aiming for a top-three finish in the 400-metre race. Seasoned runner Johannes will travel to South Africa to compete in the Spar grand Prix Challenge on 27 June.
Countdown
There are few competitions left for those attempting to qualify, and preparation camps depend on the availability of funds.
For Para-athletes the cut-off for qualification was 6 June. Memory Kahlari from the Paralympic Committee said the list of athletes who will represent Namibia at the Paralympic Games will only be available after 23 June.
“We still have to receive the high-performance slots,” she added.
The Tokyo Olympics will be held from 23 July to 8 August, while the Paralympics Games will be held from 24 August to 5 September.
