NHRA urges clubs to register jockeys
The Namibia Horse Racing Association held its annual general meeting over the weekend.
In its efforts to improve the standards of jockeys in the country, the Namibia Horse Racing Association (NHRA) has urged clubs to register their riders.
Addressing the NHRA's annual general meeting in the capital last Saturday, president Marthinus de Waal said the move will enable the association to establish a database to deal with issues jockeys might face.
“Jockeys play a very important role in this sport. We as an association have to put measures in place to look after them as these are the people who make sure our horses perform at the end of the day,” De Waal said.
He added that riders must be registered with the Social Security Commission and that they should receive adequate training.
The president informed the gathering that the association will this year host a training session for jockeys, to be facilitated by professional South African trainers.
“They should be treated with respect and there should be life for them after the sport as well. We should look into their needs and solve them,” he said.
The NHRA condemned the issue of clubs buying other clubs' jockeys without the permission of owners.
The meeting also resolved that a 30-day notice should be given to the NHRA if a jockey wants to move to a different club.
“It will be a great thing for clubs to cooperate among themselves when in need of jockeys to avoid issues, because we will have cohesion,” De Waal advised.
He further condemned the tendency and conduct of some jockeys who ride while under the influence of alcohol.
He said this is a dangerous practice and added that horse owners and clubs will be punished if this continues.
