Newspaper Cup launched
The 19th edition of the Namibian Newspaper Cup was launched in Windhoek on Thursday, with the organisers promising a bigger and better event.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Tangeni Amupadhi, the editor of The Namibian, said the tournament helped keep youngsters doing something productive during the Easter weekend.
“Youngsters can get distracted during the long weekend. It may not seem like an important weekend until people mention the Brave Warriors, but it keeps them engaged in productive activities, and that is what keeps us going,” he said.
He added that the tournament no longer focused on men alone. Since last year, women's teams could take part too.
He said the tournament also benefited the host regions by boosting the local economy.
He announced that Standard Bank had come on board with a sponsorship of N$ 1 million for the next three years.
The chief executive of Standard Bank Namibia, Junias Mungunda, applauded The Namibian newspaper for organising the tournament, saying despite the tough economic conditions currently being experienced by the country, they were happy to be part of the tournament.
“Sports development should be a collective effort, not only for the central government to foster, but the private sector must come on board as well. We are an active and strong partner of sports and we commit for three years. It was an easy decision for us to make given that this platform for national cohesion is invaluable,” he said.
Namibian Football Association (NFA) Normalisation Committee chairperson Hilda Basson-Namundjebo promised a competition to remember.
“At NFA what is key is the output and we are all about [the] mutually beneficial nature of our engagements with others. Therefore, we commit to deliver a cup you have not seen before,” she declared.
The event was graced by the minister of youth, sport and national service, Erastus Utoni, the ministry's executive director, Emma Kantema-Gaomas, and the director of sports, Sivute Katamba.

follows:
Group A: Oshikoto, //Karas, Kavango East and Zambezi
Group B: Kavango West, Kunene, Omaheke and Hardap
Group C: Otjozondjupa, Ohangwena and Erongo
Group D: Khomas, Oshana and Omusati
