Drowning victim still missing
The remains of an eight-year-old girl who drowned in the Okavango River at Mbapuka village, 160 km east of Rundu, at the beginning of July still have not been recovered.
The girl and nine other children were crossing the river in a canoe from Namibia into Angola on July 1 when the incident occurred.
Kavango Region Deputy Commissioner Willie Bampton said yesterday that the police's water wing and family members have been searching for the remains for over two weeks now, but to no avail. The search continues. It is alleged that the children had been afraid of something they assumed was a hippopotamus in the river. Frightened of the unknown object, the children jumped out of the canoe and nine of them managed to reach the riverbank.
