RUNDU
More than nine months after a probe was launched into a hit-and-run accident on the B8 Trans-Caprivi highway at Rundu’s Ndama location, investigations are still ongoing.
The accident claimed four lives.
Vensislaus Mbangu Mutero stands accused of culpable homicide after he allegedly killed a family of four.
The matter has been postponed more than twice in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court.
Mutero’s last court appearance was on 24 September, when acting magistrate Rufinus Jikerwa remanded the matter to 26 November due to incomplete police investigations.
Family slain
On 30 December, Mutero, who was driving from east to west, hit four pedestrians who were crossing the road.
The victims were identified as Petrus Kongo Haingura (44), Muhafereni Patricia Musinga Haingura (38) and Belindine Kasiku Haingura (1), who died on the spot, while Phillip Poroto Haingura (5) succumbed to his injuries at the Rundu State Hospital.
The victims are all related and Namibian Sun learnt that the family was on their way home from a church service that evening.
Vehicle abandoned
Mutero, who hails from Rundu's Kehemu location, was arrested the same evening after police found his vehicle abandoned about a kilometre from the accident scene.
Namibian Sun has established that Mbangu was released from custody last year after the Rundu Magistrate's Court struck a case from the roll for which he had been arrested in September 2015. This matter involved the murder of his girlfriend and six-year-old son at Ndiyona, 110 kilometres east of Rundu.
Rauna Shihuaandu is the prosecutor.
