Namibia's middleweight boxer Lukas 'The Demolisher' Ndafoluma says he has had to overcome depression and severe stress during the coronavirus state of emergency lockdown.

Having eagerly anticipated 2020 to be his year of great things, Ndafoluma's dreams crumbled after all sporting events were cancelled due to the pandemic.

In January, the boxer said he was ready to become what he always struggled to be and that he felt closer to a world title fight than ever before.

A week shy of possible glory

“Things for me however did not work out because the virus came and it stopped all activities.

“The sad part about all these things was the fact that my WBO fight was just a week away before the lockdown was announced.

“It was something that I had to deal with and I can tell you that it proved more difficult days after when I realised I might not even be fighting at all this year,” he said.

Overcoming stress

Despite being in the midst of questioning why life has been so unfair, the boxer had to pick himself up and now hopes for better days.

He has since decided to continue working hard on his own to distract himself from all the negative feelings he was experiencing.

“I decided that I will not let these bad feelings pull me down even when I sometimes felt like I was deprived of my right to win titles.

“Doing workouts on my own and watching a few interesting clips on social media and television was a sort of way to fight the stress I had,” he added.

Welcoming open of gyms

The fact gyms have reopened under stage three of the state of emergency has come as a blessing to Ndafoluma.

“I am now able to go to the gym with my hand sanitiser and mask all the time.

“This will help me to remain fit and be ready for any fight that pops up.

“For now, I want to encourage everyone to remain positive and to never let stress get to them,” he said.

Ndafoluma's last bout, against Malawian fighter Charles Misanjo, resulted in a victory at the Windhoek Country Club last December.
