NC to appoint interim technical director
The Fifa Normalisation Committee says it will appoint a temporary technical director to run football affairs for three months while it recruits a permanent director.
The Fifa Normalisation Committee's (NC) chairperson, Hilda Basson-Namundjebo, says they have identified someone to serve as interim technical director for the Namibia Football Association (NFA) and will soon announce who it is.
“It is a very crucial position and we are not ready to make a fixed appointment till next year. A technical director's task is to look at the development aspect of the NFA, not just for men footballers but for women as well, among other things,” she said.
“In the past there was no development agenda at the NFA. Things were just done in a haphazard manner. People would make decisions at the spur of the moment without long-term plans. But now we have time to fix all this,” Basson-Namundjebo said.
Technical directors are usually appointed to improve football development and human resources management. They also consider technical aspects that would help to achieve development objectives.
Coaching programmes, youth development, coordinating courses for coaches and referees, women's football and all activities of the national teams are among some of the priorities of the NFA technical director.
The position of head coach of the national men's football side, which was left vacant by the departure of Ricardo Mannetti, is also temporarily filled at the moment, by Bobby Samaria. An announcement was made in September this year that the coaching position would only be filled permanently after November.
Basson-Namundjebo then said that they would not be able to appoint a coach before appointing a technical director, as that person would work closely with the coaches.
“This means that the technical director must be in office and interview his or her own coaches, along with a panel of identified personalities,” Basson-Namundjebo said.
This complicates the whole process of hiring a coach on permanent basis.
Many in the local football fraternity are closely watching the progress being made by the NC and the amount of time it is taking them to execute their tasks.
“I think a technical director needs to be appointed as a matter of urgency, with this person being consistent in their role because honestly, if you look at the Brave Warriors squad for instance, most of those guys will phase out in the next four to five years.
“Who then will fill those positions? The feeding programmes are not that effective. So, we need someone who can identify those areas and work on concrete plans which can consistently fix and feed national team. This is just one of things to look at,” said a football pundit who did not want to be named.
