Namibian women ready for T20 challenge
The Zimbabwe Women's T20 Cricket Challenge is set to commence on 29 April and ends on 4 May.
The T20 challenge aims to promote women's cricket in Africa and will see Namibia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Uganda competing for the spoils.
Uganda are the firm favourites to win the tournament, as they won the ICC Women's World T20 Africa Qualifiers after defeating Zimbabwe in the finals played in Namibia in September last year.
As the African winners, Uganda will join the winners from other ICC regions - Bangladesh, Ireland, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, the Netherlands, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates - at a qualifying tournament for the World Cup that will be held in the West Indies in November.
Kenya were part of the T20 qualifiers in Windhoek last year, but will not feature in the Women's Twenty20 Challenge tournament in Zimbabwe, as they are facing a management crisis and the team's travelling costs were not covered in Cricket Kenya's current financial budget.
Namibia team manager Hester Khan said they may cause an upset at the competition.
“This tournament helps us a lot because not only do we get to compete with the best, but we will get the opportunity to assess the team and see how far we have come since September last year. Last year we had a very young and inexperienced team, but the players are more prepared now.
“We also want to improve on certain aspects. We will do video analyses, to know how our opponents play,” said Khan.
The Namibian squad is as follows:
Anneri Van Schoor (captain), Yasmeen Khan (vice-captain), Irene Van Zyl, Kayleen Ann Green, Dietlind Foerster, Juriene Arrasta Diergaardt, Reehana Khan, Carmin Liebenberg, Sylvia Nanghali Shihepo, Hannelise De Klerk, Wilka Nalitungwe Mwatile, Namusha Shiomwenyo, Adri Van Der Merwe, Christopher Wayne Coombe (coach) and Fortune Matawu (assistant coach).
