Namibian cyclists excelled to win gold, silver and bronze medals at the 10th African MTB XCO championships held in Cairo, Egypt over the weekend.

Alex Miller took gold in the junior men category, while Tristan de Lange produced a silver medal performance in the men's under-23 category and elite cyclist Till Drobisch managed to walk away with a bronze medal.

Miller, who took home bronze in the junior men's category last year in Mauritius, won in a time of 1:06:57 seconds. De Lange's time was 1:21:01 seconds and Drobisch ended his race in a time of 1:37:03 seconds.

Coach Hans du Toit said the track was steep. He said Miller broke away from lap two, kept his consistency and ended up 30 seconds ahead of the second-placed cyclist.

“De Lange performed well in the Commonwealth Games and fought hard to get the second spot in race after dropping to fourth position in the third lap. “Drobisch was racing well despite the fact that he had a technical problem, but managed to keep his position,” Du Toit said.

Egypt hosted the event for the first time ever at the Wadi Degla Protectorate and 16 African countries participated. For two consecutive days, cyclists all the way from South Africa, Kenya, Botswana, Tunisia, Côte d'Ivoire, Lesotho, Namibia, Morocco, Mauritius, Niger, Zimbabwe and Burkina Faso competed, challenging their agility and fitness.

Mountain biking is the sport of riding bicycles off-road, often over rough terrain, using specially designed bikes. Mountain bikes share similarities with other bikes but incorporate features designed to enhance durability and performance in rough terrain.
