Cricket Namibia's (CN) quest to ensure that Team Namibia is well-prepared for the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) men's T20 World Cup will cost close to N$8 million.
These funds would have been directed at the Eagles preparation plans, which include accommodation, flights, transport, venue hire, consultancy fees, day allowances, equipment, hosting expenses, match fees, visas, clothing, nutrition and conditioning fees.
However, the funds exclude special equipment such as analytical programmes, fitness tagging systems, a bowling machine, marketing and branding, as well as medical and physiotherapy fees.
Change of plans
While preparations have been hampered due to the coronavirus pandemic, the team has continued to practice at home.
Namibia had planned to host Scotland and Nepal in April, as well as the United States and Papua New Guinea in September.
“That is what we had proposed before the Covid-19 pandemic and when we were certain of the tournaments, we had lined up for the World Cup preparation,” CN's Natalia Nauyoma said.
She added that all ICC tournaments are funded by the ICC, but CN-planned tournaments and activities are not funded by the council and thus are A financial burden shouldered by CN.
“We sent the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) a proposal to cover the expenses,” she said.
The NSC's chief administrator Freddy Mwiya said the request was forwarded to the ministry last year.
He, however, did not shed light on whether CN needs to draw up a new proposal due to the pandemic.
Scheduled dates
Namibia will for the first time appear at the senior World Cup since they featured in the 50-over event in 2003. Namibia became the 14th team to qualify for Australia 2020.
This year's T20 World Cup is the seventh edition of the tournament, with matches to be held in Australia from 18 October to 15 November.
The final will be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. In April 2020, the ICC confirmed that despite the coronavirus pandemic, the tournament was still planned to go ahead as scheduled.
However, ICC officials fear that hosting the event this year is “too big a risk”.
A decision on the tournament will be made on 10 June.
