Mweya off to WBC convention

The World Boxing Council (WBC) is set to celebrate its 56th annual convention in Kiev, Ukraine from September 30 to October 5 at the Fairmont Grand Hotel, with some of the sport's greatest stars confirming their attendance.

Local referee and judge Fillemon Mweya will form part of the convention, where he will brush shoulders with world boxing champions like Vitali Klitschko, who is now the mayor of Kiev, Julio Cesar Chavez, Roberto Duran, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis and Humberto 'Chiquita' González.

He will also acquire new refereeing and judging skills.

“I'm the only Namibian referee registered with the WBC, the number one boxing organisation in the world.

“It's going to be a big convention, there will be judging seminars, as well as a workshops and referee certification seminars,” he said.

“I will gain a lot of experience and have an opportunity to write a test and get accredited internationally, meaning I will be recognised worldwide.”

Mweya added that doors will open for future assignments outside of Namibia, once he is done at the convention.

He will travel to Ukraine on 29 September.
