MVA pleads for responsible driving
With the festive season approaching, road users have been urged to reduce the usual holiday carnage by driving responsibly.
According to the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA Fund) during the 2016/17 festive season 124 people died in car crashes. These fatalities were recorded between 22 November 2016 and 17 January this year.
Of the deceased, 70% were male and 30% female. Most of them were between 16 and 35 years old.
MVA Fund statistics show that most of the 603 crashes during this period were roll-overs (36%), followed by collisions (26%) and pedestrian-related accidents (19%).
A total of 1 087 people sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Compared to the same period the previous year, crashes decreased by 8% and injuries by 16%, while fatalities increased by 6%, in the last festive season.
“This harrowing analysis reminds us all of the gruesome reality on our roads. Let us plan in advance for road trips, remain vigilant, wear seatbelts at all times, watch out for pedestrians, adjust to road conditions such as heavy rains which cause slippery roads and keep a safe following distance. Take a personal stand against road crashes, and safe your life as well as that of others,” said the Fund's chief of corporate affairs, Kapena Tjombonde.
The MVA Fund once again reminds the public to report crashes to the MVA Fund Accident Response Number, 081 9682.
