MTC unveils fibre-optic services

Mobile telecommunications operator MTC yesterday announced its new fibre-optic business solutions.
Fibre-optic cable is a high-speed data transmission medium and MTC said the new development was in response to increased need for faster internet speed, which created a need for increased capacity in the data network.
At a ceremony in Windhoek yesterday, MTC’s acting CEO, Thinus Smit, said fibre offers reliable and fast internet services and allows the management multiple devices with ease.
“In technology, changes are unavoidable. Technology continues to change and grow along with the increasing demand for faster and high-quality internet connection,” he said.
According to Smit, the mobile operator continues to keep up with these ever-growing changes. He said MTC would continue to make new technology available in order to provide the best internet service supported by the latest infrastructure and reliable networks.
Patrick Mushimba, the general manager of information technology at MTC, said the demand for higher bandwidth by Namibian businesses was increasing.
“We are currently experiencing a trend where services that were previously on local servers at each individual company are now moving to the internet as cloud-based services,” he said.
In addition, Mushimba said, the use of video services in business was also increasing.
MTC’s Tim Ekandjo said when a customer contacts them wanting a fibre-optic connection, they check the company’s location along the routes which the cables are laid.
“Currently we are laying more fibre cables connected to our roadside cabinets. From the cabinets we will be able to direct fibre lines directly to your place of business or premises, with the least turnover and minimal installation timeframe as possible,” said Ekandjo.
MTC’s manager for transmission and radio, Raymundo Pahula, said in a nutshell, the new infrastructure just means “speed, speed and more speed”.
The permanent secretary in the ministry of information and communication technology, Mbeuta Ua-Ndjarakana, and MTC board chairperson Elvis Nashilongo officially unveiled the new offering. Some other MTC board members were also present.
