Meatco and Hangana shine at SADC awards
Namibian companies fared exceptionally well in their first showing at the annual SADC Quality Awards, recently held in Gaborone, Botswana.
Both the Meat Corporation of Namibia (Meatco) and Hangana Seafood walked away from the Gaborone International Conference as winners in their respective categories.
Meatco won the title of ‘exporter of the year – large enterprises’, while Hangana scored first place in category ‘product of the year – large enterprise’.
This was the first time any companies from Namibia have been involved in the annual award ceremony, now in its fourth year.
The initiative is organised by national standards bodies across SADC, with each responsible for hosting the initial, national level ceremonies.
“It is from these national awards that winners then qualify to enter and compete with other first place winners from other SADC countries,†Riundja Ali Kaakunga, CEO of the Namibia Standards Institution, said. “It has been years of very hard work, first to encourage Namibian companies to participate in the quality awards at national level and secondly, to enter the winners for the regional awards. NSI seizes this opportunity to congratulate Meatco and Hangana Seafood for their achievements that made our country proud and call upon all other enterprises in Namibia to emulate their example,†she
said.
According to SADC Executive Secretary Dr Stergomena Lawrence Tax, the purpose of the quality awards initiative is to recognise and appreciate organisations and individuals contributing to quality advancement in all sectors of business within the SADC region through procedures and processes that are in line with local, regional and international practice.
“National Quality Awards are a catalyst for excellence, competitiveness and economic development and have been witnessed by the zeal and enthusiasm to establish them by a number of countries worldwide,†she said.
