Matron arrested for alleged food theft

A hostel matron responsible for ordering food for learners was arrested at Haimbili Haufiku Senior Secondary School in Eenhana last Thursday on charges of conspiring to steal food valued at nearly N$30 000. Elizabeth Nakapunda, 50, from Onuno village, was arrested along with her 22-year-old son, Paulus Talombili Kapula. He was caught transporting the stolen food and trying to sell it. Police spokesperson Inspector Stephen Nuuyi said at the weekly crime briefing on Sunday that Nakapunda had conspired with the truck driver delivering the food to steal it from the truck on the road between Tsumeb and Eenhana. He said the police managed to recover the food. The stolen items consisted of 60 litres of milk, 180 kg of meat, 360 kg of potatoes, 55 kg of sugar and 90 litres of cooking oil. The truck driver is yet to be arrested, Inspector Nuuyi said. Nakapunda and Kapula appeared in the Eenhana Magistrate’s Court on Friday and their case was postponed to May 8 for further police investigation and for them to obtain legal representation. The two were remanded in custody. Meanwhile, three unknown suspects who pretended to be police officers conducting firearm inspections stole goods including a revolver from Farm Eerste Ring at Otavi on Thursday. They arrived at the farm at around 19:30 in a white sedan with green number plates. Nuuyi said the three suspects held the farm owner and his friend at gunpoint. They fled with a revolver, two cellphones, Land Cruiser car keys and N$2 200 in cash. No arrests have been made and none of the stolen items have been recovered yet. Police investigations into the matter continue. At Otjiwarongo, a 33-year-old man was held at gunpoint by two suspects and robbed of N$11 229 in cash at G and T Entertainment on Saturday. at around 23:50. One of the suspects has been arrested and police investigations continue.
