Looking to the future
The Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust) is hosting its third annual Fashion Show for 2018 themed Futuristic-Afro. The fashion show is a means of not only raising funds but also to allow Nust students to showcase their talents. It affords students an opportunity, they would not have otherwise had, to demonstrate the natural creative talents they possess.
Diego Talaya, co-station manager at Nust's radio station says they chose the theme for the fashion show to instil pride in African culture and for students to embrace and celebrate their traditions. “Africa is definitely getting the recognition it deserves internationally. Many people are beaming with pride and are happy to represent their tradition… this is why we chose the Afro-futurism theme for the show and also to get a glimpse of what Namibian culture will seem like in the future,” says Talaya.
The Nust Fashion Show has been a platform for students to showcase their designer, modelling and mentoring skills since its inception in 2016. The first show's theme was based on recycled material; in 2017 the theme for the designs was Technology in Fashion.
