Local Egyptians back Morsi's ousting

WINDHOEKFAITH SANKWASA

A handful on Egyptians living in Windhoek took to the streets yesterday in a peaceful demonstration to show their support for their country's new interim government.
Egypt's new regime was put in place following the ousting of its democratically-elected president Mohammed Morsi on July 3.
Morsi is currently being held incommunicado at an undisclosed military facility.
Yesterday, flag-wielding demonstrators marched to the Egyptian embassy in Klein Windhoek, where they were received by ambassador, Hazem Ramadan.
They expressed their support and happiness with the new Egyptian regime.
The group was led by Dr B. Fawzy, who addressed the media in the presence of Ramadan, said that Morsi's ousting was not a second revolution, but the completion of something that started on January 25.
“The people are happy. The majority of the Egyptians were dissatisfied when asked if we had achieved our demands and objectives after electing Morsi' “The ex-president (Morsi) had failed us here in Namibia and elsewhere in the world and this led to a worldwide protest petition to see a new change in Egypt. No one can take this moment away from us,” said Fawzy, who refused to give his first name.
He added that the 30 million Egyptian nationals who took to the streets in foreign countries, along with those that are currently embroiled in violent clashes in Egypt, should serve as a sign that theirs is a noble goal.
“We are condemning any violence that is taking place. We want a peaceful democracy. We are hoping for Egypt's peace to be restored and this should be done transitionally.”
He added: “We want a government that represents the people's wishes and will. So it is our wish to tell our fellow nationals that we must stop carrying weapons against each other, so we can unite as a country.”
Ramadan also expressed his delight with the interim government, saying it symbolises democracy and renewed hope to change the old system.
“The people's ambition was social change, freedom and equality. This was demonstrated by the mass protestors, who are now in support of the new government,” Ramadan said.
He said biased international media houses are twisting the truth about what is really happening in Egypt.
“We suspect they are being paid by the Muslim Brotherhood leaders.”
The Muslim Brotherhood is the Arab world's oldest, most influential Islamic movement and political opposition organisation.
