Knife killings rock violent weekend

At least three people were brutally killed this weekend, including a 28-year-old man who was attacked with a panga and stabbed to death with a knife this past Friday evening. According to police spokesperson Inspector Slogan Matheus, a fight broke out between two men in Otjomuise’s Beijing Street. It is alleged that one of the men’s friends then intervened, after he was hit with a bottle by another man. A gang fight then ensued that resulted in the death of Obert Martin, while three of his friends sustained injuries that were treated at the Katutura State Hospital. The suspect, also a 28-year-old male, was arrested at his home the next day and will make his first court appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court in today. In a separate incident, 30-year-old Vaino Johannes died after he was stabbed with a knife by his brother-in-law. The suspect allegedly fled the scene and is still at large. In another incident at Ombili shebeen in Oshikango’s Eemboo village, a 26-year-old man was stabbed with a pocket knife in the left side of his chest. He died on his way to a healthcare facility. The deceased was identified as Shilongo Abed Shimbode, while his suspected killer is a 23-year-old man. A one-year-old baby boy died at a village in the Omungwelume area, after swallowing a traditional fruit. The police also arrested two Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) polling officials at the Ondangwa Town Council, after they allegedly stole an envelope containing ECN forms and hid them under a bridge. The two - aged 33 and 40 - were allegedly seen by a security guard, who informed police officers. The suspects are expected to appear in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court today. In Keetmanshoop, a man is fighting for his life after being stabbed seven times. The suspect has, however, not been arrested, as the victim is in a critical condition and is unable to give details about the incident. A 22-year-old woman was arrested last Wednesday after allegedly dumping her newborn baby girl. It is suspected that the suspect gave birth on the same day around noon and then dumped the baby in a pit latrine, near the house where she is employed as a domestic worker. JEMIMA BEUKES
