Agriculture minister Calle Schlettwein said meat vendors in the northern regions will have to wait until the beginning of March before they can sell beef again.
The vendors had to stop selling meat in January when the ministry announced foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) control measures in the northern regions.
The outbreak, which was first detected in the Oshikoto Region last December, led to the restriction of animal movement in the northern regions. Schlettwein, who was speaking to traditional leaders, farmers and council leaders at Omuthiya on Thursday, said the government was working on containing the outbreak and needed the support of farmers so that the ban could be lifted, allowing people to market their livestock.
He said cattle need to be vaccinated twice.
“I sympathise with the vendors because Covid-19 already affected their business and now FMD. But please let's comply. If this is not done, the timeframe may be extended to six months or more if a case is picked up,” he stressed.
