Husab blaze extinguished
MINE ON FIRE: A fire raged at the Husab uranium mine near Swakopmund for six hours on Tuesday before being brought under control.
Swakopmund Uranium CEO Zheng Keping said EPCM, a contractor at the mine, reported the fire at around 15:30 in the milling section.
Nobody was injured and mining operations were not affected. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
According to Keping, who could not give an estimate of the damage, the liners of the ball mill caught fire.
The flames were extinguished six hours later with support from the Swakopmund Uranium fire team and the Swakopmund and Arandis fire brigades.
A fire also broke out at the final product recovery plant of the Rössing uranium mine in February this year. The fire was isolated to the roasters inside the facility.
