Christina Werner is co-owner and one of the managers at Elisenheim guest farm.
“All facilities need to be opened early, for the staff to start with their daily duties. At Elisenheim Guest farm, breakfast is served/ready from 08h00, as the visitors normally are on vacation and relaxed. If you work at an establishment, where early sightseeing is offered, breakfast times may differ,” she says.
Housekeeping employees are advised in the morning, which rooms need to be made up (guests, which are staying on) and the ones, which will be vacated by 10h00 Laundry also needs to be checked and that the linen are clean and neatly stored. Cleaning material and soap have to be in stock at all times.
After breakfast, you are available at reception for guests checking out and if guests need transfer to town/airport, you need to also organise well in advance. When housekeeping is done, you inspect the rooms, whether everything is neat and in order for the following visitors.
When they got to Farm Elisenheim in 1983, she and her husband were still working in town to make a living. “On weekends, we were always visited by friends and tourists. Our first child was born in 1984 and we decided to open a Guest farm. This gave us an opportunity to work from home and be parents at the same time,” she says.
You need to love what you are doing, and should be prepared to work hard and long hours, if you want to go into hospitality.
“In hospitality, I find, practise makes good. You should not be too shy and have the confidence to work with people.
