An elderly grandfather who single-handedly raised a teenager since he was a baby has expressed his deep shock at the charges of rape and murder that have been levelled against the boy.

The 14-year-old boy, who stands accused of raping and killing 57-year-old Sarah Jagger, was apparently raised with strict Christian principles by his grandfather after both his parents died when he was still a baby.

The grandfather on Friday told the Magistrate's Court in Rehoboth that he was the father of the boy's mother.

Family members of Jagger told Namibian Sun that their hearts were broken. “She was the best of the Jaggers,” they said, and one added that Jagger and the boy knew each other.

The autopsy found that Jagger was raped and died of severe head injuries. It is alleged that the boy, who may not be named since he is a minor, crushed the woman's skull with a rock before cutting off her foot with a knife just outside the Bahnhof settlement last Monday. The foot was dumped in a grocery bag roughly a kilometre from the body.

He was arrested on Wednesday last week.

Late on Thursday, he appeared in court, in camera, to be charged with murder, rape and arson. A further charge of violating a dead body is expected to be added when he makes his second appearance tomorrow.

It is alleged that he also set two farmhouses alight last week.

The child is said to have attended school only to grade 4 and said that he does not smoke or drink.

Bail was denied by Magistrate Andre Matulich after the prosecutor, Victor Mutumbulwa, said the investigation was in its early stages and that the boy's home address still had to be confirmed. There was also concern that he may interfere with the investigation.

He is being held in a juvenile detention facility at Rehoboth.

It is expected that Jagger will be buried at Bahnhof this coming weekend.
