Green Schemes don't pay bills
The vice-president says poor financial management at the government's irrigation schemes is defeating their purpose.
Vice-president Nangolo Mbumba has called on the government's Green Scheme irrigation projects to pay their utility bills on time.
Several Green Scheme projects have had their electricity supply suspended because of arrears.
In a speech read on his behalf by trade and industrialisation minister Tjekero Tweya at the inauguration of the Northern Regional Energy Distributor's (Nored's) new offices at Rundu, Mbumba said the government's main aim with the Green Schemes was to eradicate poverty and hunger.
He said he was disappointed to learn that they were not paying for the electricity they used, prompting Nored to suspend their electricity supply.
A month ago a daily newspaper reported that Nored had cut off the power supply to government irrigation projects at Shadikongoro and Ndonga Linena in the Kavango East Region.
“I am concerned to learn that some of the Green Schemes and customers do not pay their electricity bills on time, a situation which led to Nored cutting off their power due to non-payment,” Mbumba said. He called on Green Scheme managers to act in accordance with the good principles on which the schemes were established.
“I would like to urge the management of the Green Schemes to understand that the tendency of not paying your accounts has the potential to defeat the overall purpose for the creation of Nored and local economic development,” Mbumba said.
