Goethe-Institut Namibia currently employs about 20 persons and frequently subcontracts local individuals and companies to execute projects and initiatives

The institute envisions developing further fruitful relationships with individuals and companies in Namibia’s arts, culture, language and information industries to exchange ideas and skills with their counterparts in Germany.

The GI respects the autonomy of these industries in Namibia and encourages the full control of locals over projects.

“We also hope that more Namibians are aware and make use of the many study opportunities in Germany, not only in areas of teaching the German language but also others that enable them to return and contribute to Namibia’s development in many industries,” said press and communications officer Lendl Izaaks.

The Goethe-Institut often sends staff members for regional and international conferences and workshops for operations in Namibia to be in line with the principles and policies of the Goethe-Institut network around the world. “We believe in investing in our staff and their skills development,” said Izaaks.

When asked by Careers how the institute measures success, he explained it is measured in many ways and the most important to them is the public’s participation in and appreciation of projects, as well as the feedback received from language course clients to the level of being inspired to make an individual contribution to the development of Namibia’s arts, culture, and language and information industries. While funded by the German government, the GI is an independent and non-profit organisation.

The institute emphasises that everything done by the Goethe-Institut gives back to the community that hosts it.

“We are not a company but an independent cultural, language and information institution of the Federal Republic of Germany that aims to bridge the gap between Germany and other countries of the world through exchange programmes that enable and empower individuals in the said industries,” said Izaaks.

All its events are open to the public and if there is an entry fee, it is very small and symbolic. Arts, culture, language and information should be accessible by all members of society, regardless of their socio-economic position.
