Fredericks remains record-holder
Yesterday marked the 24th anniversary of former Olympian Frank Fredericks' world indoor 200m record sprint in Liévin, France. He remains the world record-holder with a time of 19.92 seconds, set in 1996.
Fredericks is widely regarded as one of the best sprinters who graced the athletics arenas of the world.
Running in the 100 and 200 metres, he won four silver medals at the Olympic Games (two in 1992 and two in 1996), making him Namibia's only Olympic medallist.
He also won gold medals at world championships, world indoor championships, All-Africa Games and Commonwealth Games.
Fredericks broke 20 seconds for the 200m 24 times. In August 1996, he ran 19.68 seconds in the Olympic final in Atlanta, Georgia, which is the third-fastest non-winning time for the event. He is also the oldest man to have broken 20 seconds for the 200m. On 12 July 2002 in Rome, Fredericks won the 200m in a time of 19.99 seconds at the age of 34 years and 283 days. The Namibian ran and excelled amongst the likes of Michael Duane Johnson, at a time when there was a lot of pressure and competition in the sprints.
