Flood warning for Zambezi

The hydrological service within the agriculture ministry has warned that the Zambezi River has started to overflow its banks and that water is pushing into the eastern Zambezi floodplains.
It said the river continues to rise rapidly at Katima Mulilo and recorded 5.69 metres on Tuesday morning. The usual level for the river at this time of year is 2.46 metres while last year at this time it was 1.99 metres.
In southern Namibia, people along the lower Orange River are also warned to be on high alert for possible flooding and are advised to take precautions.
Dam levels
Meanwhile, according to the latest dam bulletin issued on Monday, the average level of Namibia's dams is at 88.4%, while six of the country's dams are at 100% or above.
The Hardap and the Oanob dams in the south were the only dams in the country that received inflow last week.
The level of the dams in the south now stands at 93.4%%, compared last season when it was 34.1%.
The Hardap Dam received an inflow 5.562 million cubic metres of water last week.
This raised the level of the dam to 73.5%. Last season the dam was 71.6% full.
The Oanob Dam recorded an inflow of 0.108 million cubic metres. The dam is now 100.3% full while last season it was 52.6% full.
The Neckartal Dam was 100% full on Monday. The Naute Dam is 103.4% full, compared to last season's 80.4%.
The Dreihuk Dam is 44.4% full while the Bondels Dam is 46.6% full. Last season these dams were filled less than 10%.
In central Namibia, the average dam level is now 96.2%, compared to last season's 49.4%.
The Swakoppoort Dam is now 99.6% full, Von Bach 87.1%, the Omatako Dam 100.3%, and the Friedenau Dam 99.6%.
In the eastern area the average dam level stands at 43.4%, compared to last season when it was 17.6%.
The Olushandja Dam is 15% full, the Omatjene Dam is ow 0.9% full and the Omaruru Delta Dam is empty. Widespread thundershowers are expected in the Kavango, Omaheke and Zambezi regions today.
